Let’s take a ride to the river Evros Delta

On the southeastern edge of the Evros prefecture, on the border with Turkey, the river Evros forms a lush delta, a biotope of international importance that covers 200 sm.

The flora and fauna mosaic is composed by a diversity of different and rare species that multiply in the area due to the ideal climate conditions and geographical position.
The delta hosts a great variety of animals and plants, unique in Europe. For example, 316 out of the 420 bird species listed in Greece have been recorded here.

One of the reasons why this wetland is so significant is because a lot of bird species migrate here and it provides a home for some species to winter. Dozens of thousands of aquatic birds from northern Europe and Russia winter in the Delta. At that time you can admire hundreds of flamingoes, swans and ducks feeding in the delta lagoons, while at sunset they move towards the coast.

A big number of birds use the delta as a stopover during their migration journeys from Europe to Africa and vice versa. Some of the incoming species include white pelicans, glossy ibis, spoonbills, Dalmatian pelicans, little terns and black terns as well as the most significant presence being that of the slender-billed curlew, one of the rarest species in the world.
